What our bags are made from

Not all sustainable materials are created equal. Here's what goes into our range, where it comes from, and why each one earns its place

Compostable

Our compostable bags are made from PLA (cornstarch-derived) and PBAT, a flexible biodegradable polymer. Together they perform like plastic but break down into water, CO2, and biomass, with no microplastics and no toxic residue.

They're certified by the Australasian Bioplastics Association to Australian composting standards, so when we say compostable, it's verified — not just a label.

Home compostable bags can go straight into your home compost bin. Commercially compostable bags need the higher heat of an industrial facility. Check with your local council whether your kerbside organics bin accepts them, as it varies by region across New Zealand.

Recycled and ocean-bound plastic

Recycled plastic gives used material a second life instead of sending it to landfill. Ocean-bound plastic goes a step further, recovering plastic from coastal communities and waterways before it reaches the sea, where it becomes almost impossible to reclaim.

We work with SEArcular, whose suppliers operate across Southeast Asia intercepting ocean-bound plastic and supporting the waste picker communities who make that recovery possible. Both reduce demand for virgin plastic, and ocean-bound recovery directly addresses one of the most urgent environmental crises on the planet.

Bamboo

Our bamboo products are made from 100% viscose derived from bamboo, a rapidly renewable plant that grows without pesticides, minimal water, and regenerates from its own root system after harvest.

Bamboo viscose is soft, absorbent, and biodegradable — and because it replaces single-use alternatives like paper towels and synthetic cloths, the impact compounds every time it's used. No microplastic shedding, no waste after five months of paper towels replaced.

The bamboo composition in our products is independently verified by Intertek, so the material claims on the label are tested, not assumed.

Natural Calico Cotton Reusable Tote Bag

Cotton

Natural, durable, and built to be used hundreds of times over. The environmental value of a cotton bag is in its longevity. The more it replaces single-use alternatives, the better its footprint becomes.

Cotton sourcing matters. How and where it's grown has a real impact on water use, land, and the livelihoods of farming communities. We range Fairtrade certified bags, supporting fair pay, safe working conditions, and more sustainable farming practices.

We also use GOTS certified materials where applicable, meeting global standards for organic textiles and ethical labour across the supply chain.

Paper

Brown kraft paper is compostable, biodegradable, and made from wood pulp. We source from suppliers who support responsible forest management, ensuring the materials we use come from well-managed sources rather than exploitative ones.

Good materials, responsibly sourced

Knowing what's in a product is one thing. Knowing where it came from is another.
