Cotton case study: Anandhi Farmers Association

Anandhi was established by Mr. R S Balagurunathan in India over 20 years ago and is now being run by his daughter Anandhi.

Their vision is to improve the livelihood of farming families by promoting organic farming and fair prices through Fairtrade. This will in turn promote better agricultural practices without the use of fertilizers and pesticides. To develop a system where everyone can contribute to a sustainable way of farming and maintain a better life by receiving fair prices for their commodity.

Anandhi’s partnership with Fairtrade has allowed for the implementation of multiple different programs to tackle inequalities and provide better supplies for its farmers, including the development of battery sprayers, providing hearing aids to members, giving school children access to potable water, construction of school buildings, soil testing programs, and providing seeds to farmers.

  • Anandhi joined Fairtrade in 2016 and has 917 members
  • Free ear testing camp; provided 35 hearing aids after testing 50-60 of the older farmers
  • 325 battery operated sprayers distributed to farmers; they spray organic pesticides and fertilizers like neem oil, panchakavya, amrita, and karaisal.
  • 8 water tanks in 6 primary schools
